Chandigarh, 30 August (H.S.): A tragic incident was reported from the Panjab University campus late Saturday night when a 22-year-old student was found dead inside his room at Boys Hostel No. 4. The deceased has been identified as Chaitanya Singh, a fifth-year BA LLB student and a native of Haryana’s Panipat district.

Police suspect that the student may have died by suicide, but the exact circumstances surrounding his death have not yet been officially confirmed. A post-mortem examination is being conducted to establish the cause of death.

According to preliminary information, Chaitanya’s family members had been calling him repeatedly since Saturday morning, but he did not answer their calls. Later, at around 8 pm, some of his fellow students went to his hostel room to check on him.

The door was locked from inside, and despite repeated attempts to contact him, there was no response. The students eventually broke open the door and found Chaitanya hanging from a ceiling fan with a bedsheet.

With the help of security personnel, the students brought him down and rushed him to the PGI emergency department in an ambulance. Doctors there declared him dead.

Police reached the hostel after receiving information about the incident. A CFSL team was also called to the spot at around 10:45 pm to examine the room and collect forensic evidence, including fingerprints and other material relevant to the investigation.

The police have taken possession of Chaitanya’s mobile phone and other items from the room. No suicide note has been recovered so far.

Chaitanya was reportedly involved in student politics and election-related activities at the university. Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association vice-president Advocate Ashish Binoi and hostel warden Dr. Naveen Kumar described him as a friendly, active and academically promising student.

He had also reportedly been involved in activities related to the High Court Bar Association elections around two months ago. Fellow students and teachers said he appeared normal in recent days, and there had been no obvious indication that he was facing any serious difficulty.

The police are examining the student’s mobile phone, call records, chats and CCTV footage from the hostel to determine what happened before his death. His family members’ statements and the post-mortem findings will also form part of the investigation.
