West Midnapore, 30 August (H.S.): A theft at two temples in Chandrakona has triggered anger and concern among local residents after idols, jewellery and several other items were allegedly stolen during the night.

The incident was reported from Mar village under Manikundu Gram Panchayat in Chandrakona Town police station area, where thieves allegedly targeted the Vishnu Temple and Sheetala Temple.

According to local residents, everything was normal on Saturday night and devotees had offered prayers at the temples. However, when people arrived on Sunday morning, they were shocked to find several items missing.

The stolen items reportedly include idols, silver ornaments, copper articles and utensils made of brass and bronze. An Ashtadhatu idol is also reported to be missing.

Police were informed after the theft came to light. Personnel from the Khirpai outpost of Chandrakona Town Police Station reached the spot and launched an investigation.

Police are examining how the thieves entered the temples and identifying those involved in the incident. The thefts at two temples in succession have caused concern among residents.

Locals have demanded that the accused be identified and arrested at the earliest and given stringent punishment.

A local resident said, “They took everything, including the idol of the goddess. Her silver jewellery and copper items are gone. The Ashtadhatu idol is also missing.”

Police are continuing their investigation to unravel the theft.
