New Delhi, 30 August (H.S.): A programme will be organised at Chharti Lal Goel Heritage Park in Delhi on September 1 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Chharti Lal Goel, the first Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly. Former Union Minister Vijay Goel shared the information through a video posted on his social media account on Sunday.

Vijay Goel said that Chharti Lal Goel, who was the first Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly and his father, was a dedicated, honest and unblemished public leader who devoted his entire life to public service and his principles.

He recalled that during the Emergency, his father spent 19 months in Ambala Jail while fighting to safeguard democracy. Inspired by his father, Vijay Goel said he too participated in the underground movement and was later imprisoned in Delhi for taking part in a Satyagraha.

Goel said that wherever his father served — whether in the Legislative Assembly, as Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Corporation or as Chairman of the Electricity Department — he always gave the highest priority to serving the people.

He said that his father’s values and ideals had played the greatest role in shaping the person he is today.

Goel further said that dedicating the Chharti Lal Goel Heritage Park, built opposite the Red Fort in his father’s memory, as well as his ancestral haveli in Haryana, to public service was an effort to carry forward the values and principles that guided his father’s life.

The commemorative programme will be held at Chharti Lal Goel Heritage Park at 10 am on September 1 to mark his birth anniversary.
