Guwahati, 30 August (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday shared his experience of being honoured as a ‘Gaonburha’ for a day at the Assam Regimental Centre in Shillong.

In a social media post, Sarma said the Assam Regiment has traditionally preserved and respectfully used the term ‘Gaonburha’, which is a familiar and significant title associated with villages in Assam and the Northeast.

The Chief Minister said the Assam Regiment has given the traditional term a distinguished place in the military sphere, thereby showcasing Assam’s unique cultural tradition at the national and international levels over the years.

Recalling his visit to the Assam Regimental Centre in Shillong on Saturday, Sarma described the opportunity to become a ‘Gaonburha’ for a day as a moment of great honour and privilege.

He expressed his gratitude to the Assam Regiment for the memorable experience of being welcomed with the special title rooted in Assam’s social and cultural life.---------
