New Delhi, 03 August (H.S.): Willy Walsh on Monday assumed charge as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of IndiGo, the country's largest airline. Walsh is a pilot and an experienced aviation industry leader who recently completed his tenure as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). IndiGo had appointed him as its CEO on March 31.

In a statement issued on Monday, IndiGo said that Walsh has taken over as CEO to lead the airline's next phase of growth and global expansion. As CEO, Willy Walsh will oversee the company's overall management and strategic direction. His key focus areas will include accelerating the airline's global expansion, enhancing operational excellence, strengthening network and commercial strategies, and further improving customer experience.

Walsh said, Over the past two decades, IndiGo has built a remarkable legacy and established itself among the world's largest airlines in a very short span of time.

He added, India is emerging as one of the fastest-growing aviation markets in the world. IndiGo has immense opportunities ahead, and there could not be a better or more appropriate time for me to join the airline.

IndiGo Managing Director Rahul Bhatia said that Willy Walsh's extensive global experience in the aviation sector, along with his operational and strategic expertise, would play a crucial role in strengthening the company's international expansion strategy. He said Walsh, known for his forthright approach during his tenure as IATA Director General, began his career as a pilot.

It may be noted that IndiGo operates a fleet of more than 430 aircraft and runs around 2,200 flights every day.
