New Delhi, 03 August (H.S.): Indian Railways registered a strong performance in freight transportation during July 2026, carrying 141.3 million tonnes of cargo. This marks a nine per cent increase compared with 129.7 million tonnes transported in July 2025. Freight earnings also recorded an eight per cent year-on-year growth during the same period.

According to data released by the Ministry of Railways on Monday, the increase in freight movement was driven by sustained demand from key industrial and economic sectors, improved operational efficiency, and continued efforts to make the freight transportation system more effective.

The Ministry stated that among the major freight categories, iron ore loading registered the highest growth at 22.2 per cent. Fertiliser transportation increased by 12 per cent, while loading of foodgrains and coal each grew by 11.5 per cent. The movement of other commodities also recorded a 12.1 per cent increase.

The Ministry further said that priority was given to the supply of domestic coal to meet the rising demand from thermal power plants. As a result, coal transportation to power plants increased by 20 per cent compared with the corresponding period last year, highlighting Indian Railways' significant contribution to meeting the energy sector's requirements.

The rise in freight movement also had a positive impact on railway revenue. Compared with July 2025, freight operations generated an additional Rs 1,137 crore in July 2026, resulting in an overall eight per cent increase in freight revenue.

Among the zonal railways, East Central Railway and Eastern Railway delivered the strongest performance, each registering a 33 per cent increase in freight revenue. West Central Railway recorded a 23 per cent rise, while South Eastern Railway posted a notable revenue growth of 10.33 per cent.

Indian Railways also reported improved performance in passenger transportation. During July 2026, the national transporter carried 633.5 million passengers, up from 621.9 million passengers in July 2025. Passenger traffic increased in both suburban and non-suburban segments, reflecting the growing popularity of rail travel and improvements in passenger services.

The Ministry of Railways said Indian Railways continues to focus on enhancing freight capacity, improving passenger amenities, expanding modern railway infrastructure, and strengthening operational efficiency. According to the Ministry, these initiatives are aimed at further supporting India's economic growth, energy security, and an efficient transportation network.
