New Delhi, 03 August (H.S.): Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh on Monday inaugurated the construction work of a new pedestrian footbridge over the Najafgarh Drain in North Delhi. The bridge, which is expected to be completed within around seven months, will provide safe and convenient connectivity to thousands of residents.
The newly planned footbridge will connect areas including Gud Mandi, Rajpura, Roop Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar and Yamuna Marg. Once completed, it will provide relief to students, senior citizens, office-goers and local residents who have been facing difficulties in commuting for a long time.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said that the project reflects the Delhi government’s commitment towards ensuring public safety and developing better civic infrastructure.
Referring to a bridge accident that occurred a few months ago, the minister said the incident highlighted the urgent need for regular structural inspections of bridges in the national capital. He alleged that no comprehensive safety audit of bridges was carried out during the previous government’s tenure, due to which several important structures could not be inspected on time.
The minister said that the Delhi government is now conducting a comprehensive audit of all bridges, flyovers and foot-over bridges across the city to ensure public safety. He added that the government is not waiting for problems to escalate and has already approved nearly Rs 2 crore for the construction of the new footbridge, with work now underway.
He said the project is not merely about constructing a bridge but is also an effort to strengthen public confidence in Delhi’s infrastructure. After completion, the footbridge will ensure safer and more convenient movement for pedestrians, reduce commuting difficulties and improve connectivity between nearby areas.
Residents welcomed the initiative, describing it as an important step towards fulfilling a long-pending demand. The bridge is expected to particularly benefit schoolchildren, senior citizens and people who rely on walking to access markets, public transport facilities and nearby residential areas.
