
Hooghly, 03 August (H.S.): A youth from Nandigram died after a tragic road accident while he was travelling to Tarakeswar to offer holy water to Lord Taraknath. The deceased has been identified as Surya Maity (18), a resident of Sonachura area in Nandigram. Two others were also injured in the accident and are undergoing treatment at Arambagh Medical College and Hospital.
According to police sources, a group of devotees from Nandigram had started their journey towards Tarakeswar on Sunday in an engine-operated trolley van after collecting Gangajal from Sheoraphuli. When they reached an area under Dhaniakhali Police Station, a pickup van allegedly rammed into the trolley van with great force.
In the accident, Surya Maity, along with Sanjay Pradhan of Southkhali and Shantanu Bhuiyan, sustained serious injuries. Local residents and police rescued the injured persons and rushed them to a local health centre. They were later shifted to Arambagh Medical College and Hospital for further treatment.
Surya Maity succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment on Monday. The condition of the other two injured persons is being monitored, hospital sources said.
After receiving information about the incident, Purshura MLA Biman Ghosh, Arambagh MLA Hemanta Bag, along with several BJP leaders, visited the hospital. They enquired about the condition of the injured and expressed condolences to the family of the deceased.
The tragic incident has cast a pall of gloom over the Nandigram area. Police have started an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
