Guwahati, 03 August (HS): Heavy rainfall on Monday triggered severe waterlogging on National Highways 27 and 6 in the outskirts of Guwahati, causing major inconvenience to commuters and disrupting traffic for several hours.

The worst-affected stretch was beneath the Jorabat flyover, where rainwater reportedly accumulated up to four feet, making it difficult for vehicles to pass through. Traffic movement on both highways was temporarily brought to a standstill due to the flooding.

Local residents blamed the recurring problem on alleged illegal hill cutting in neighbouring Meghalaya. They claimed that red soil washed down from the denuded hills has clogged natural drainage channels, preventing rainwater from flowing away and causing it to spill onto the highways even after moderate rainfall.

Residents have urged the Meghalaya government to take immediate steps to address the issue. Shopkeepers located along the Jorabat flyover also reported losses, saying customers were unable to reach their establishments because of muddy, waterlogged roads in front of their shops.
