Hooghly, 03 August (H.S.): A passenger was killed after being hit by a moving train while crossing the railway tracks at Chinsurah Railway Station in Hooghly district on Monday afternoon. The incident created panic among passengers at the station.

According to Bandel Government Railway Police (GRP) sources, the passenger was crossing the railway tracks from Platform No. 1 towards Platform No. 2 when a mail train was entering the station on Down Line No. 1. After noticing the approaching train, he tried to climb onto the platform but failed and fell onto the tracks. Moments later, he was run over by the train and died on the spot.

During the incident, the victim’s bag, spectacles and shoes were thrown away onto the railway tracks. After receiving the information, railway police reached the spot, recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination.

The GRP informed that the identity of the deceased has not yet been officially established. However, a logbook recovered from his bag suggests that he may have been a resident of Bishnupur in Bankura district, West Bengal. Police also suspect that he was working at a private organisation in Durgapur. Efforts are underway to confirm his identity and gather further details.

Railway authorities have once again appealed to passengers not to cross railway tracks under any circumstances and to use foot overbridges or designated routes. Officials stated that ignoring safety rules in a hurry to catch trains often leads to fatal consequences.
