Kolkata, 03 August (H.S.): The Calcutta High Court on Monday granted anticipatory bail to Sumit Roy, personal assistant to Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee, in a case related to alleged job fraud in West Midnapore's Debra. However, the court rejected his anticipatory bail plea in a separate case involving alleged fraudulent sale of government land in Salboni.

The two anticipatory bail petitions came up for hearing before the High Court on Monday. While Roy secured relief in the Debra case, he continued to face legal setbacks after the court declined to grant him protection from arrest in the Salboni matter.

Rejecting the anticipatory bail plea in the Salboni case, Justice Tirthankar Ghosh observed that, based on the statements of the accused already arrested and the materials collected during the investigation, it would not be appropriate to grant anticipatory bail to Sumit Roy at this stage.

In the Debra case, which pertains to allegations of securing government jobs in exchange for money, the High Court granted anticipatory bail to Roy. The court also directed him to appear before the Investigating Officer within 10 days and cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

The cases are currently under investigation, and the High Court's order provides Roy partial relief while allowing the probe in both matters to continue.
