Ujjain, 03 August (H.S.) : Madhya Pradesh was immersed in the colours of devotion and spirituality on the first Monday of the holy Shravan month as thousands of devotees gathered at major Shiva temples across the State to offer prayers. The grandest celebration took place in Ujjain, where the majestic procession of Lord Mahakal was carried out with traditional splendour, drawing more than three lakh devotees who sought blessings of the presiding deity of the ancient city.

On the auspicious occasion, Bhagwan Mahakal appeared in the revered ‘Chandramouleshwar’ form, seated in a silver palanquin and taken through the historic streets of Ujjain as part of the traditional royal procession. The atmosphere turned deeply spiritual as devotees chanted “Har Har Mahadev” and “Jai Shri Mahakal”, filling the entire route with religious fervour and devotion.

The sacred rituals at the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple began in the early hours of the morning. The temple doors were opened at around 2:30 am, followed by the traditional Bhasma Aarti, one of the most significant rituals associated with Lord Mahakal. After the divine ceremony, the deity was adorned with an elaborate special decoration using milk, curd, Panchamrit and other sacred offerings, presenting the majestic royal appearance of the ‘Rajaadhiraj’ Mahakal.

Later in the afternoon, the grand procession commenced with traditional music, religious chants and ceremonial arrangements. Lord Mahakal travelled through the city in a silver palanquin in the Chandramouleshwar form, while another representation, ‘Manmahesh’, was placed on an elephant, adding to the grandeur of the centuries-old tradition.

By around 1:30 pm, more than 3,05,797 devotees had already taken darshan through the Nandi Hall and Kartik Mandapam arrangements at the temple. The administration and temple authorities made extensive arrangements to manage the large gathering and ensure smooth movement of devotees.

The spiritual wave was not limited to Ujjain. Across Madhya Pradesh, major Shiva shrines witnessed an overwhelming response from devotees on the first Shravan Monday.

At Omkareshwar-Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga in Khandwa district, devotees participated in special rituals as the traditional procession of Lord Shiva reached Gaumukh Ghat and Kotitirth. A sacred Panchamrit Abhishek was performed amid the chanting of Vedic mantras, attracting thousands of pilgrims.

Similarly, the famous Ashtamukhi Pashupatinath Temple in Mandsaur witnessed a massive gathering of devotees who arrived to offer prayers and perform religious rituals. The historic Bhojeshwar Mahadev Temple at Bhojpur in Raisen district also became a centre of faith, with more than 30,000 devotees performing Jal Abhishek by afternoon.

Special security and crowd management arrangements were put in place at major religious centres across the State. Police personnel, temple committees and district administrations worked together to regulate the movement of devotees and maintain a peaceful atmosphere during the celebrations.

The first Shravan Monday also witnessed a surge in Kanwar Yatras across Madhya Pradesh. Devotees carrying holy water embarked on religious journeys to offer Jal Abhishek at Shiva temples. In Narmadapuram, large numbers of Kanwariyas collected sacred Narmada water from Sethani Ghat and began their pilgrimage towards Jatashankar Mahadev Temple in Pachmarhi.

Several other prominent Shiva temples, including Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple in Gwalior, Matangeshwar Dham in Khajuraho and Jageshwar Dham in Bandakpur, also witnessed long queues of devotees from early morning. Local Shiva temples in Ashta, Umaria and Sheopur similarly recorded a significant increase in visitors.

The widespread participation reflected the deep cultural and spiritual connection of Madhya Pradesh with Shaiv traditions. From the ancient Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain to smaller village temples, the first Monday of Shravan transformed the State into a centre of devotion, faith and religious celebration.

The grand celebrations also highlighted the importance of Ujjain as one of India's most significant spiritual destinations. With the historic Mahakal procession continuing its centuries-old tradition, devotees once again experienced a unique blend of faith, heritage and cultural identity that defines the spiritual landscape of Madhya Pradesh.
