Dhaka, 03 August (H.S.): The Bangladesh High Court has granted bail to prominent young Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari in two more criminal cases, taking the total number of cases in which he has secured bail to four. However, he will remain in judicial custody as bail is still pending in two other cases. The monk has been in prison for nearly 20 months, and his arrest has drawn strong criticism from India and several other countries.

Chinmoy's counsel, Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya, confirmed the development, stating that six cases have been registered against his client. Of these, bail has now been granted in four cases.

According to the Dhaka Tribune, a division bench comprising Justice K.M. Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Tahir passed the bail order on Sunday evening.

Bhattacharya said that despite securing bail in four cases, Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari will not be released immediately because he has yet to obtain bail in the remaining two cases.

He added that one of the pending cases is a murder case related to the death of lawyer Saiful Islam in Chattogram, which is currently under trial.

Apart from that, the High Court's stay order remains in force in the sedition case registered against the monk over the alleged disrespect of Bangladesh's national flag. Bail petitions in the remaining two cases are scheduled to be heard on August 16.

Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was arrested in Dhaka on November 25, 2024, in connection with the sedition case involving the alleged insult to the national flag. He has remained behind bars since his arrest.
