Bhubaneswar, 03 August (H.S.): AIIMS Bhubaneswar has been conferred the prestigious “Emerging Government Institution in Organ Transplantation” award at the 16th Indian Organ Donation Day (IODD) celebrations held in New Delhi on Monday.The event was organised by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.
According to a press release issued by AIIMS Bhubaneswar, the award was presented by Union Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare and Chemicals & Fertilizers, Anupriya Patel, in the presence of senior dignitaries including Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava, Director General of Health Services Dr. Loveneesh G. Krishna, Additional Secretary Vijay Nehra, and NOTTO Director Dr. Anil Kumar.
The honour was received on behalf of the institute by Dr. Anita Saxena, Dr. Ashutosh Biswas (Executive Director & CEO), Dr. Prabhas Ranjan Tripathy (Medical Superintendent), and Dr. Bramhadatta Pattnaik (Associate Professor and Head, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology).
AIIMS Bhubaneswar was recognised for its remarkable progress in organ transplantation, particularly the sharp increase in transplant procedures—from 16 in 2024 to 63 in 2025—highlighting its rapid growth and commitment to advanced patient care. Notably, it is the only AIIMS in the country to receive this prestigious recognition.
Expressing gratitude, Dr. Ashutosh Biswas said the award reflects the unwavering commitment, multidisciplinary teamwork, and dedication of transplant teams, intensive care specialists, nursing staff, coordinators, and support personnel. He also acknowledged the invaluable contribution of donor families in saving lives and inspiring society.
Since the inception of its transplant programme, AIIMS Bhubaneswar has successfully performed 78 kidney transplants, including 61 from living donors and 17 from deceased donors. The institute has also facilitated six successful organ donations, along with four living donor liver transplants and one deceased donor liver transplant.
In a relatively short span, AIIMS Bhubaneswar has achieved significant milestones in organ retrieval, transplantation, and post-transplant care, while actively promoting organ donation through sustained public awareness campaigns and community outreach initiatives across Eastern India.
