New Delhi, 29 August (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday extended his heartfelt greetings to sports enthusiasts across the country on the occasion of National Sports Day.

In a post on the social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi said, “The dedication, passion and determination of our athletes make the entire nation proud. We also pay tribute to the legendary Major Dhyan Chand Ji, whose talent will continue to inspire generations.”

National Sports Day is observed every year on August 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, who was born on August 29, 1905. He played a pivotal role in India’s gold-medal victories in hockey at the 1928, 1932 and 1936 Olympic Games.

The Central Government officially announced in 2012 that August 29 would be observed as National Sports Day. The occasion is marked across the country through initiatives aimed at promoting awareness about sports, physical fitness and the importance of an active lifestyle.
