Durgapur, 29 August (H.S.): The body of a 20-year-old medical student was recovered hanging inside a hostel room at a medical college in Rajbandh, under Kanksa police station in Durgapur, West Burdwan. The student, who had come from Bihar to pursue medical studies in West Bengal, is suspected to have died by suicide. However, police have sent the body for post-mortem examination, and the exact cause of death will be known after the report is received. No suicide note has been recovered so far.

The deceased has been identified as Abhishek Kumar (20), a first-year student at the medical college in Rajbandh. He was a resident of the Sitamarhi area of Bihar and lived in the college hostel. A fellow student shared the same room with him.

According to police sources, Abhishek's roommate had gone to offer namaz. When he returned, he found the room locked from inside. Despite repeatedly knocking and calling out for some time, there was no response.

The roommate subsequently informed the college and hostel authorities. The door was then broken open, following which Abhishek was found hanging inside the room.

He was immediately rescued and taken to the medical college hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

The hostel authorities informed Abhishek's family in Bihar about the incident. Police have started an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.

Investigators have searched the hostel room and are questioning his classmates. Police are also trying to determine whether the student had been suffering from mental distress or depression, or whether he was facing any form of pressure or other difficulties.

The exact reason behind the suspected suicide remains unclear, and police are awaiting the post-mortem report as part of the investigation.
