Kolkata, 29 August (H.S.): Kolkata Police has registered an FIR against former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in connection with the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) Foundation Day programme held on Cathedral Road in Kolkata.

The FIR was registered at Hastings Police Station over alleged violation of court directions, a reported scuffle with police personnel, obstruction of official duties and continuation of the programme beyond the time permitted by the court.

Apart from Mamata Banerjee, the organisers of the programme have also been booked under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police have initiated the case taking suo motu cognisance of the alleged violations.

The TMCP Foundation Day programme was organised by the Trinamool Congress camp on Friday at Cathedral Road. The Calcutta High Court had directed that the event be conducted while keeping the northbound lane of the road open for traffic. However, police alleged that both lanes were closed during the programme.

There were also allegations of a confrontation and scuffle between police personnel and participants during the event. The court had permitted the programme to continue only until 3 pm, but police alleged that the event continued even after the stipulated deadline.

Taking these developments into account, Kolkata Police registered an FIR against Mamata Banerjee and the organisers.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had earlier warned of action over the incident on Cathedral Road. He alleged that Mamata Banerjee had violated the directions of the Calcutta High Court.

Adhikari had also directed the police to register an FIR in connection with the alleged violations. The police subsequently registered the case at Hastings Police Station against Mamata Banerjee and the organisers of the TMCP Foundation Day programme.
