Guwahati, 29 August (HS): Five Congress leaders have submitted applications seeking the party’s nomination for the upcoming by-election to the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency, party sources said.
Former MLAs Sibamoni Bora and Durlav Chamua are among those who have expressed interest in contesting the bypoll. Imdad Hussain, Maidul Islam Khan and Ranjit Barman have also applied for the party ticket.
The application process concluded on Friday. Each aspirant submitted a non-refundable demand draft of ₹1 lakh in favour of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, along with a certified copy of the electoral roll carrying their name, to the party treasurer.
The Nagaon Lok Sabha seat became vacant after former MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from the party and joined the BJP in March, ahead of the Assam Assembly elections held in April.
The Election Commission of India has not yet announced the schedule for the by-election.
The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee is likely to examine the candidature of all five aspirants before taking a final decision on the party’s nominee for the Nagaon seat.-----------
