Kolkata, 27 August (H.S.): Former Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillor Bapi Ghosh has been accused of threatening a family into signing an agreement for their land for the construction of flats. The family was reportedly promised a flat, a shop and Rs 10.5 lakh in cash under the agreement. While the flat and shop were allegedly handed over, the family claims that the promised cash amount was never paid. A complaint has been lodged at Shyampukur Police Station.

According to the complainant, Anita Shaw, a plot of land belonging to her family near Gopimohan Lane in Shyampukur was taken in 2020 for the construction of flats. She alleged that Bapi Ghosh, who was then the councillor of Ward No. 7, along with his associate Debabrata Akuli, threatened her family and forced them to enter into the agreement.

The family was allegedly assured that once construction was completed, they would receive a flat, a shop and Rs 10.5 lakh in cash. However, Anita alleged that although the flat and shop were subsequently provided, the cash payment was not made.

She further alleged that when the family demanded the outstanding amount, they were threatened. According to her complaint, they were warned that her family would have to face consequences if they continued to demand the money.

Anita recently approached Shyampukur Police Station and lodged a complaint. Based on her allegations and a preliminary inquiry, police have registered an FIR against Bapi Ghosh and his associate.

The case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including allegations of cheating, extortion, criminal intimidation and criminal conspiracy.

At the time of filing of the news, no response had been received from former councillor Bapi Ghosh regarding the allegations.
