Idukki, 27 August (H.S.) : CPM workers blocked the Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway at Pooppara on Thursday, demanding compensation for the family of a plantation worker who died after being attacked by a wild elephant at Thalakkulam earlier in the day.

The victim, identified as Ochuthevar, a native of Bodinayakanur in Tamil Nadu, was overseeing a plantation belonging to his daughter when the elephant attacked him. The incident occurred as he entered the estate in the morning. Heavy fog had reduced visibility, and he apparently failed to notice the animal standing inside the plantation.

Residents working in nearby estates rushed towards the area after hearing the elephant trumpet. They found Ochuthevar lying seriously injured and carried him from the remote plantation at Thalakkulam to Pooppara. He was then taken to a hospital, but doctors could not save him.

Following his death, CPM workers and local residents launched a road blockade at Pooppara, disrupting traffic along the national highway. The protesters demanded that the government provide immediate financial assistance to Ochuthevar's family and introduce effective measures to prevent further elephant attacks in the region.

They also accused the Forest Department of failing to address the frequent movement of wild elephants through plantations and inhabited areas. The protesters alleged that Ochuthevar's body had been shifted to Theni Medical College without the consent of his relatives, further intensifying public anger.

Wild elephants have been repeatedly sighted around Thalakkulam, Pooppara and the adjoining BL Ram area, causing growing concern among plantation workers and residents. Local people said the continuing presence of elephant herds had made it dangerous for workers to enter estates, particularly during periods of poor visibility.

The protesters sought urgent government intervention, adequate compensation for the bereaved family and stronger surveillance and preventive measures in vulnerable settlements. They said assurances without action would no longer be acceptable.
