Lucknow, 27 Aug (HS): The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad

(ABVP) has welcomed the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet’s decision to increase the

monthly stipend of MBBS and BDS interns in government medical colleges,

institutes and medical universities from Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 25,000. ABVP said

the decision is a significant step towards addressing the long-standing

concerns of medical interns and ensuring financial support in proportion to

their workload and responsibilities. ABVP had earlier submitted a memorandum to

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Medical Education Minister Brajesh

Pathak, demanding an increase in the stipend.

Medical interns play an important role in the functioning of

healthcare institutions and undertake long duty hours, including night and

emergency duties, along with patient care and clinical responsibilities. The

earlier stipend often made it difficult for interns, particularly those staying

away from their hometowns, to manage essential expenses such as accommodation,

food and transportation. ABVP had also raised the disparity between the stipend

provided in Uttar Pradesh and that offered by central institutions and several

other states. The increase to Rs. 25,000 will provide much-needed financial

relief to medical interns during their internship.

ABVP National Secretary Abhay Pratap Singh said,

Medical interns work in demanding conditions while balancing intensive

clinical responsibilities with their training. The increase in stipend from Rs.

12,000 to Rs. 25,000 recognises their contribution and will provide meaningful

support towards their essential expenses. ABVP has consistently raised the

concerns of medical interns before the government, and we welcome this positive

decision. We hope that similar steps will continue to strengthen the academic

and working environment for medical students and young doctors across Uttar

Pradesh.
