New Delhi, 26 August (H.S.): President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday extended Onam greetings to Malayalis in India and across the world, wishing them happiness, unity and prosperity on the occasion of Kerala's biggest festival.

President Murmu described Onam as a symbol of India's rich cultural heritage and spirit of fraternity. In her message, she said the festival reflects the distinctive traditions, values and cultural identity of Kerala.

The President noted that cultural and sporting events form an integral part of Onam celebrations. Traditional boat races, folk art performances, music and various sporting competitions showcase Kerala's vibrant heritage and reinforce the message of social harmony.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended warm greetings to Malayalis across the world. In a message posted on X, he described Onam as a beautiful festival celebrated with great enthusiasm by Malayalis worldwide.

“Heartfelt Onam greetings to everyone. Onam is a beautiful festival celebrated with great enthusiasm by Malayalis across the world. May this festival further strengthen the spirit of happiness, unity and prosperity,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister also wished that the lives of people would be filled with happiness and prosperity.

Onam, celebrated in the Malayalam month of Chingam, is associated with the annual homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali. The festival is observed across religious and social boundaries and is widely regarded as a celebration of equality, unity and prosperity.

People mark the occasion by preparing traditional Onam feasts, arranging floral carpets and participating in cultural programmes. Malayali communities outside Kerala also organise celebrations, making Onam a global expression of Kerala's cultural identity.
