Guwahati, 26 August (HS): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday met Union Power and Housing & Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in New Delhi and discussed the state’s long-term energy requirements, power infrastructure and urban development priorities.

The meeting focused on Assam’s efforts to achieve energy self-sufficiency and promote consumer-oriented reforms in the power sector. Discussions also covered rational utilisation of Assam’s power allocation from central generating stations.

The two leaders discussed strengthening Guwahati’s electricity distribution network, including underground cabling, as well as improving the availability and pricing of natural gas for gas-based power generation.

Sarma also raised Assam’s proposal under the Urban Challenge Fund, aimed at developing integrated urban infrastructure with a focus on healthcare, sports and climate-resilient facilities.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening sustainable, resilient and consumer-oriented energy and urban infrastructure in Assam. Union Minister Manohar Lal assured the state of the Centre’s full support in these initiatives.
