Guwahati, 26 August (HS): Flood conditions have started improving in several parts of Assam, although the situation remains critical in parts of Sivasagar, Nagaon, Dhemaji, Karbi Anglong, Jorhat and Golaghat districts. The water level of the Dhansiri River has risen above the danger mark at Numaligarh in Golaghat district.

According to data released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on August 25, a total of 22,663 people in 93 villages under 11 revenue circles remain affected by the floods. Relief and rescue operations are continuing on a large scale in the affected areas.

Except for the Dhansiri, all major rivers in the state are currently flowing below their respective danger levels. The death toll in the current flood season has risen to 108, with two more deaths reported from Golaghat district after the victims drowned in floodwaters.

At present, four relief camps and three relief distribution centres are operational. A total of 122 people are taking shelter in the relief camps, while 2,558 non-camp residents are receiving relief from the distribution centres.

Floodwaters have submerged around 4,331.85 hectares of agricultural land across the state. The state government is also assessing extensive damage to roads, bridges and other infrastructure caused by the floods.

Authorities are continuing to provide financial assistance and essential relief materials to affected people while carrying out damage assessments and relief operations in the affected areas.-----------
