New Delhi, 25 August (H.S.): Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Tuesday inaugurated the construction of the diaphragm wall (D-wall) for the new underground Shivaji Stadium Metro Station being developed along the Central Vista Corridor under Phase 5(A) of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). He described the initiative as a major step towards establishing modern and seamless connectivity for a developed Delhi.

The Lieutenant Governor said that the commencement of work at the Shivaji Stadium site marked a significant milestone for the Delhi Metro. Recalling Delhi before the Metro came into existence, he said its expansion had transformed the city and added that the administration remained fully committed to providing all necessary cooperation and support to ensure its continued progress and expansion.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, in a statement, said construction work had commenced at Shivaji Stadium Metro Station as part of the Central Vista Corridor. The station is being developed under Phase 5(A) as part of the extension of the existing Magenta Line from Janakpuri West to R.K. Ashram Marg.

According to the DMRC, the Shivaji Stadium Metro Station will be an underground station and serve as a key interchange facility. The new Magenta Line station will be seamlessly integrated with the existing Shivaji Stadium Airport Express Line station through a 230-metre-long underground subway, enabling convenient interchange between the two Metro corridors.

In addition, the Shivaji Stadium Metro Station will be connected to Rajiv Chowk Metro Station through an 800-metre-long underground subway equipped with travelators. The facility is expected to provide smooth and convenient pedestrian connectivity for commuters travelling between the two stations.

The diaphragm wall at the new Shivaji Stadium Metro Station will be constructed at a depth of approximately 38 metres, equivalent to the height of a 12-storey building. Such considerable depth is required because the station will be located beneath the existing Airport Express Line.

As construction progresses, significant movement of construction vehicles is expected in the vicinity of the upcoming Shivaji Stadium Metro Station. Approximately 500 transit mixer trips per month will be required to transport around 3,000 cubic metres of concrete, while nearly 750 dumper trips per month will be needed for the excavation of approximately 15,000 cubic metres of material. This translates into around 25 dumper trips a day for the disposal of excavated material.

The new Shivaji Stadium Metro Station is expected to significantly benefit employees working in nearby areas, school students, devotees visiting Bangla Sahib Gurudwara and passengers travelling on the Airport Express Line. M/s Afcons Infrastructure Limited has been entrusted with the construction work at the site.

The Central Vista Corridor will span approximately 9.913 km and comprise nine underground stations — Shivaji Stadium, Yuge Yugeen Bharat, Central Secretariat, Kartavya Bhavan, India Gate, War Memorial-High Court, Baroda House, Bharat Mandapam and Indraprastha.

The commencement of construction work at Shivaji Stadium Metro Station under the Central Vista Corridor marks another milestone in the expansion of Delhi Metro connectivity in central New Delhi. Construction work at the Central Secretariat Metro Station under the same corridor commenced on June 24, 2026.
