South 24 Parganas, 25 August (H.S.): Police have arrested four people in connection with the murder of BJP worker Bapi Pramanik in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas. Among those arrested is suspended BJP leader Sujan Mondal. Krishna Mondal, Kanak Mondal and Anil Naia have also been arrested.

According to local sources, a dispute had broken out between two groups in Uttar Tengarbe ria village on Sunday over control of a Durga Puja committee. The dispute soon escalated into a physical altercation. Later that night, BJP worker Bapi Pramanik was allegedly murdered.

The victim’s family alleged that Bapi was called out of his house by phone at night and attacked with a sharp-edged weapon. The family has alleged that suspended BJP leader Sujan Mondal was the alleged mastermind behind the attack. They further claimed that, allegedly acting on Sujan’s instructions, miscreants supported by the Trinamool Congress attacked Bapi.

The family also claimed that Bapi’s wife was present at the spot at the time of the incident and witnessed the alleged attack with a sharp-edged weapon.

Following the incident, a complaint was lodged at Baruipur police station. Police had detained three people on Monday and began questioning them. Based on the findings of the investigation and information obtained during interrogation, police have now arrested four people, including Sujan Mondal.

Police are investigating the exact motive behind Bapi Pramanik’s murder and the alleged role of each of the arrested persons in the incident.

It may be mentioned that Sujan Mondal had already been suspended from the BJP before the incident. The BJP has also clarified its position on the matter. Uttam Kar, a member of the BJP state committee and former district president, alleged on Monday that Trinamool-supported miscreants were behind the murder. He also said that the leader against whom allegations have been made had been suspended by the party several days before the incident.
