Hooghly, 25 August (H.S.): Former CPI(M) MLA from the Uttarpara Assembly constituency and senior party leader Professor Shrutinath Praharaj was arrested by the police on Monday night in connection with a case related to a protest in Chinsurah.

Police from Chinsurah police station arrested Praharaj from his residence in Uttarpara and brought him to the police station. Two other CPI(M) workers, Dipak Chakraborty and Anupam Chakraborty of Konnagar, were also arrested in connection with the case.

The three were produced before the Chinsurah court on Tuesday. The court subsequently granted bail to Praharaj.

According to police sources, the three were allegedly involved in creating unrest during a ‘Break the Law’ protest at Ghori More in Chinsurah on August 10.

On the day of the incident, Left workers and supporters allegedly broke through police barricades while attempting to march towards the District Magistrate’s office. Police stopped the protesters at Ghori More.

When the protesters allegedly attempted to breach the police barricade and move ahead, police resorted to a baton charge to disperse them. Several Left workers were injured in the incident, while two police personnel were also reportedly injured.

More than 40 Left workers were detained on the day of the incident. Later that night, four people were arrested, while the others were released. The following day, the court granted bail to those arrested.

Police subsequently arrested Praharaj in connection with the same case. He was produced before the Chinsurah court on Tuesday and was later granted bail.

The investigation into the incident is continuing.
