Kolkata, 24 August (H.S.): At least 20 workers and local residents fell ill following a gas leak at an ice factory in Sappukur, near Dharmatala More in Haroa, under the Basirhat subdivision. The incident triggered panic in the densely populated area.

The incident occurred at around 8:30 pm on Sunday, when a pipe at the factory suddenly burst. A mixture of ammonia, nitrogen and carbon dioxide reportedly began leaking from the damaged pipe, affecting people in and around the factory.

Several workers and residents complained of breathing difficulties after being exposed to the gas. Police reached the spot and rescued the affected people before taking them to a nearby hospital. Three of them reportedly developed worsening symptoms and were shifted to Haroa Rural Hospital for further treatment.

Firefighters and personnel from Haroa Police Station also reached the site after receiving information about the incident. They managed to stop the gas leak from the damaged pipe and brought the situation under control.

The exact reason why the factory pipe burst is yet to be established. Police have started an investigation and are also assessing whether any additional people were affected by the leak.

Following the incident, local residents staged a protest and blocked the Berachampa-Haroa Road, demanding action against the ice factory owner. The blockade was later withdrawn after police assured the protesters of appropriate action.

The situation in the area is currently reported to be under control.
