Guwahati, 24 August (HS): Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has achieved a major milestone in its green energy initiative, with its total installed solar power capacity reaching 42.1 MWp as of July 2026.
According to NFR CPRO Kapinjal Kishor Sharma, NFR commissioned 23.7 MWp of solar power capacity between January and July 2026, the highest addition among all zonal railways of Indian Railways during the period. The railway began its solarisation initiative in 2011.
Lumding Division, including the Guwahati portion, has the highest cumulative solar installation at 17.7 MWp, followed by Rangiya Division with 9.6 MWp. Alipurduar, Katihar and Tinsukia divisions have also contributed significantly to the expansion of solar infrastructure.
During 2025-26, NFR generated around 114 lakh units of solar power, saving approximately Rs. 8.6 crore. Compared with 2024-25, solar generation increased by about 90%, while financial savings rose by 95.45%. In 2024-25, around 60 lakh units of solar energy were generated, resulting in savings of nearly Rs. 4.4 crore.
NFR is also implementing an additional 9 MWp of solar capacity across its divisions. Major installations are planned in Lumding, Rangiya, Katihar and Alipurduar divisions.
The railway said the continued expansion of solar power will help reduce carbon emissions, lower energy costs and improve energy efficiency, while contributing to Indian Railways’ goal of becoming a net-zero carbon emitter.-----------
