Kochi, 23 August (H.S.):Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan has said the State government will seriously examine the demand to create a new district with Muvattupuzha as its headquarters.

The Chief Minister made the announcement while inaugurating the Onam celebrations organised by the Muvattupuzha municipality.

Satheesan said he was personally fond of Muvattupuzha and its people, though the proposal initially caused him some concern because it would mean separating the region from his home district of Ernakulam.

“Despite that, the government is examining the proposal seriously. We will constitute a delimitation commission, and the demand for a Muvattupuzha district will be considered as part of that process,” he said.

Earlier, Muvattupuzha MLA Mathew Kuzhalnadan highlighted the long-standing grievances of the constituency. He alleged that Muvattupuzha had remained neglected for several years and that development projects had previously been obstructed due to political vendetta.

Responding to the MLA’s remarks, Satheesan assured residents that the government would address the region’s concerns and remove the difficulties it had faced.

“I have only one thing to say: all the grievances and hardships of Muvattupuzha will be resolved,” the Chief Minister said.

Using a financial analogy, Satheesan added that when people suffer a loss, they naturally expect to recover it along with interest. He promised that Muvattupuzha would similarly be compensated “with interest” through development initiatives.

The demand for reorganising Kerala’s existing districts has gained momentum in recent years. Proposals have been raised to divide the larger districts of Malappuram, Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram to improve administrative efficiency and ensure more balanced development.

Those supporting the proposals have called for the creation of three additional districts, which would increase Kerala’s total number of districts from 14 to 17. The proposed delimitation commission is expected to study these demands, examine administrative and geographical considerations, and recommend whether new districts should be constituted.
