Hooghly, 23 August (H.S.): A youth was injured after being caught in Chinese manja in Uttarpara town, raising fresh concerns over the continued sale and use of the banned kite string in the area.
According to reports, Priyojit Halder, a resident of Ward No. 23 in Makhla, was returning home at around 9:30 pm on Saturday when a Chinese manja suddenly got entangled around his neck in front of the Makhla Tarun Dal Club. He sustained serious injuries and was immediately taken to Uttarpara State General Hospital, where he received primary treatment.
Following the incident, Halder appealed to the police and administration to take immediate action against the sale of Chinese manja. He alleged that the banned string is still being sold at several locations under the jurisdiction of Uttarpara Police Station.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers posed by Chinese manja, which has previously caused serious injuries and deaths in Kolkata and other parts of the state.
A senior official of the Chandannagar Police Commissionerate said that they had received information about the incident and assured that appropriate action would be taken if a complaint was lodged. The official also stated that police had earlier conducted raids at several shops in Uttarpara and seized Chinese manja.
