
Guwahati, 23 August (HS): Flood conditions in Assam have improved considerably, but six districts continue to remain affected, with 12,031 people across 78 villages still facing the impact of floodwaters. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), in its data released for August 22, said all rivers in the state are currently flowing below the danger mark.
The affected districts are Sivasagar, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Nagaon, Cachar and Golaghat. Floodwaters have affected 13 revenue circles and submerged around 2,994 hectares of agricultural land.
The state government is currently operating five relief camps and one relief distribution centre. While 162 people are taking shelter in the relief camps, another 900 non-camp residents are receiving relief assistance from the distribution centre.
The flood-related death toll in the state has reached 106. A total of 8,302 animals were also reported affected, including 3,623 large animals, 2,245 small animals and 2,434 poultry birds.
Sivasagar has reported the highest extent of housing damage in the ongoing assessment. According to the August 22 figures, 248 fully damaged kutcha houses and 312 fully damaged pucca houses were recorded in the district. In addition, 522 kutcha and 842 pucca houses suffered partial damage. The district also reported damage to 56 other huts and 89 cattle sheds.
As part of the relief and rescue operations, seven medical teams were deployed in flood-affected areas on Wednesday. The government also distributed 15 quintals of rice, 2.7 quintals of pulses, 0.81 quintal of salt and 81 litres of mustard oil among affected residents.
The state government is continuing to assess damage to roads, bridges and other infrastructure caused by the floods. Relief assistance and essential supplies are also being provided to affected people as efforts continue to restore normalcy in the flood-hit areas.----------
