Thiruvananthapuram, 23 August (H.S.): Actor and former BJP leader Devan is reportedly preparing to join Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), as the party explores plans to expand its organisational presence across southern India.
Preliminary discussions between Devan and senior TVK functionaries have been completed. Two party leaders visited his residence in Chalakudy on Friday to discuss his possible entry into the party. Actor Priyanka was also present during the meeting.
Devan is expected to meet Vijay in Chennai after September 10, following which a formal announcement regarding his induction is likely to be made. Reports suggest that Devan could be appointed president of TVK’s proposed Kerala unit if he joins the party.
The meeting with Vijay has reportedly been scheduled after September 10 as the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly session will continue until September 8.
TVK, which captured power in Tamil Nadu in the first Assembly election it contested, is now considering an expansion into other southern States. The discussions with Devan are understood to be part of this initiative. Some TVK leaders had earlier held online discussions with the actor.
Devan and Vijay share a longstanding association in the film industry and have acted together in six movies. This personal familiarity is also believed to have helped advance the talks.
Devan, who served as a BJP State vice-president, announced his resignation from the party during a function at the Kanichukulangara temple. His decision had come as a surprise to the BJP leadership.
While announcing his departure, Devan said he wanted to pursue politics rooted in the ideals and teachings of social reformer Sree Narayana Guru. He alleged that he had not seen such an approach within the Kerala BJP during his five years in the party.
Union Minister Suresh Gopi reportedly attempted to persuade Devan to reconsider his resignation, but the effort did not succeed.
