Bongaigaon (Assam), 22 August (HS): Police opened fire at a dreaded robber while bringing him to Jogighopa Police Station after his arrest from Krishnai in Goalpara district, following an alleged attempt to escape.

The accused, identified as Barat Ali, sustained a bullet injury to his leg during the police encounter. According to police, Ali allegedly attacked a constable, Kamal Ray and tried to flee while being taken to the police station. The constable was injured in the attack.

Police also recovered a pistol from Ali.

Ali was allegedly involved in a robbery in Jogighopa on August 19, when six Khasi men from Meghalaya’s Nongstoin had arrived in the area to purchase a second-hand vehicle. The group was allegedly assaulted and robbed of more than ₹5 lakh.

Police have launched further investigation into the incident.-----------
