New Delhi, 22 August (H.S.): Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi participated in a mega march organised in Prashant Vihar in the city’s north-western area on Saturday, reiterating the civic body’s commitment to making Delhi clean, garbage-free and greener.

During the cleanliness awareness drive, Wahi walked for nearly two kilometres as part of the shramdaan initiative and also swept the road with a broom. He directed officials to prune trees along the roadside and ordered strict action against encroachments on public roads.

The mayor also instructed officials to repair potholes and ensure better road conditions. During the mega march, mosquito-control insecticide was sprayed in the area. A street play focusing on cleanliness was also staged to raise awareness among local residents.

Addressing citizens during the march, Wahi said cleanliness was a primary responsibility of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and that public participation was essential to the campaign to transform the national capital into a world-class city. He urged residents to make cleanliness a part of their daily habits and contribute to the success of the initiative.

The mayor said the civic body had made considerable progress towards eliminating the city’s garbage mountains and expressed confidence that the remaining waste dumps would be cleared soon. He added that modern facilities were being established for the scientific processing and disposal of newly generated waste so that fresh garbage could be treated on an ongoing basis.

Wahi said the civic body’s “Delhi Free from Garbage” campaign was not limited to cleaning activities. It also seeks to increase public awareness about sanitation, maintain cleanliness in public spaces, ensure regular cleaning of vulnerable locations and bring elected representatives, civic workers and residents together as part of a collective cleanliness effort.

During the mega march, the mayor also planted a sapling under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign. He said the initiative represented both environmental conservation and a gesture of respect, and urged citizens to join the campaign in large numbers and plant more trees.

North-West Zone Deputy Commissioner Anshul Sirohi, officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, sanitation workers and local residents also participated in the mega march.
