New Delhi, 22 August (H.S.): Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday inaugurated the Centre for Advanced Research in Bacteriophages and Infectious Diseases (CARBID) at the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) in Vellore, Tamil Nadu.

In a post on social media platform X, the Chief Minister said India’s scientific talent is scaling new heights by translating research into solutions and innovation into public welfare. She said the centre, established in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), would provide fresh impetus to cutting-edge research in the field of infectious diseases.

Gupta said institutions of this nature would strengthen India’s resolve to build a healthier nation while further enhancing the country’s role in global health research.

CARBID was established at Vellore Institute of Technology by Dr N. Ramesh under the prestigious extramural “Centre for Advanced Research” programme funded by the ICMR.

The centre is dedicated to advancing cutting-edge research on the isolation and characterisation of bacteriophages and their therapeutic applications in combating life-threatening bacterial infections, particularly in view of the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance.

CARBID is also actively engaged in multidisciplinary research and development projects, translational research and consultancy services aimed at strengthening the management of infectious diseases.
