
Guwahati, 22 August (HS): Following the direction of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister Atul Bora visited the protest site at Jorabat on Saturday and held discussions with the protesters. The protest has been temporarily suspended following the talks.
The development came after the Meghalaya government assured Assam that the safety and security of vehicles and tourists travelling from Assam to Meghalaya would be ensured on all routes. The Meghalaya government also expressed regret over the recent violent incidents in Shillong and assured that such incidents would not be repeated.
Meghalaya has further assured that compensation would be provided for vehicles damaged during the violence, while the state government would bear the medical expenses of those injured. Meghalaya Chief Secretary Shakil P Ahmed has been directed to assess the damage and submit details.
The assurances were conveyed by Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar following a high-level meeting between Assam and Meghalaya officials over the recent tension and violence.---------
