New Delhi, 21 August (H.S.): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has strongly criticised the Congress over its position on Vande Mataram, calling its alleged refusal to honour the national song unfortunate and a matter of constitutional concern.
In a video shared on social media platform X, Singh said Parliament is the country’s highest legislative institution and that laws passed by Parliament are binding on everyone. He said that when an individual or organisation refuses to abide by a law or constitutional provision, it is natural for questions to arise over its allegiance to the Constitution.
He further said that refusal to respect the national song also raises questions about patriotism.
Referring to a Congress resolution from 1937, Singh alleged that the party had compromised in the face of what he described as the Muslim League’s extremist demands. He said the consequences of such compromises were eventually borne by the country in the form of Partition.
Singh asserted that compromises made under pressure from extremist elements have always proved detrimental to the country. He alleged that the Congress continues to adopt a similar approach even today, describing it as a matter of concern for the country’s future.
Calling the Congress’ decision unconstitutional and condemnable, Singh said that by opposing Vande Mataram, the party had made its political intentions clear before the country.
