New Delhi, 21 August (H.S.): BJP national spokesperson RP Singh has launched a sharp attack on the Congress over the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, questioning remarks by Congress leaders who allegedly described Sajjan Kumar as a “role model” and his death as an “irreparable loss” in posts on X.
RP Singh said Sajjan Kumar had been convicted in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. He alleged that glorifying a person convicted in the case reflected the Congress's approach to the events of 1984. He said that when those convicted are honoured while the victims are forgotten, it raises serious questions about the Congress's role and position on the violence.
In his statement, the BJP spokesperson also referred to a controversial remark made by then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who had said, “When a big tree falls, the earth shakes a little.” RP Singh said that for the families of nearly 3,000 Sikhs killed in Delhi in 1984, the violence was not merely a “little shaking of the earth”, but a tragedy that devastated their entire lives.
RP Singh said families who lost their sons, husbands, fathers and brothers in the 1984 riots could never forget the pain they endured. He said political tributes could neither erase the suffering of the victims' families nor wipe out the memory of the tragedy.
The BJP leader alleged that glorifying people convicted for their role in the 1984 violence amounted to rubbing salt into the wounds of the victims. He said the Sikh community would never forget the events of 1984 and that statements made by Congress leaders continued to raise questions about the party's position on that dark chapter.
