New Delhi, 21 August (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday shared a Sanskrit Subhashitam imbued with the spirit of altruism on his X handle, urging people to learn from the selfless flow of rivers and use their abilities for the welfare of humanity.
Sharing the verse as part of his regular Subhashitam posts, PM Modi wrote, “The uninterrupted flow of rivers teaches us how we can use our capabilities for the welfare of humanity. The same spirit of selfless service, dedication and altruism gives a new direction to the nation.”
The Subhashitam shared by the Prime Minister reads: “जीवनं स्वं परार्थाय नित्यं यच्छत मानवाः। इति सन्देशमाख्यातुं समुद्रं यान्ति निम्नगाः॥”
The verse conveys a message of selflessness through an example drawn from nature. The poet describes how rivers originating in the mountains continue to flow tirelessly towards the sea. They do not drink their own water but quench the thirst of living beings along their course and irrigate agricultural fields.
According to the poet’s interpretation, rivers convey a silent message to humanity through their selfless journey. They symbolise the idea that just as rivers dedicate everything they possess to the welfare of others before eventually merging into the sea, human beings too should not devote their lives solely to personal interests.
Instead, people should strive to use their lives and abilities for the welfare, service and betterment of others. The verse thus presents selfless service, dedication and compassion as values that can contribute to the greater good of society and the nation.
