Kolkata, 21 August (H.S.): A speeding car crashed into a guard wall in front of the Vijay Dwar of Fort William on Red Road in Kolkata on Friday morning, leaving a portion of the wall completely damaged and the front section of the vehicle badly wrecked.
According to police, the four-wheeler was travelling at high speed when the driver lost control near the Vijay Dwar and rammed into the roadside guard wall. The driver reportedly sustained minor injuries and is said to be safe.
Police reached the spot soon after the incident and detained the driver. Investigators examined CCTV footage from Red Road and adjoining areas to establish the sequence of events and identify the vehicle.
Police are currently investigating the circumstances that led to the accident. Investigators are also examining the speed of the vehicle at the time of the crash and whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or any other substance. A medical examination of the driver is being conducted as part of the investigation.
The Red Road and Fort William area, considered highly sensitive due to its strategic and administrative importance, has witnessed road accidents in the past as well. In June, a vehicle reportedly collided with a pool car near Fort William, causing the vehicle to overturn and leaving three schoolchildren injured.
Earlier in January, an accident was also reported on Red Road during a parade rehearsal.
The latest incident has once again raised concerns over speeding and road safety in and around the Red Road-Fort William area. Police are continuing their investigation to determine the exact cause of Friday morning's accident.
