Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda on Friday reviewed the prevailing H1N1 influenza situation in the country and the preparedness measures to deal with it. Delhi Health Minister Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh also attended the meeting.

During the meeting, the influenza surveillance and epidemiological situation in the country were reviewed, along with trends in influenza-like illness and severe acute respiratory infections. The preparedness of healthcare facilities for testing, laboratory surveillance and the treatment of patients suffering from seasonal influenza was also assessed.

The Union Health Minister directed officials to maintain continuous vigilance, ensure robust surveillance mechanisms and remain proactively prepared. He also stressed the need to closely monitor influenza trends on an ongoing basis.

The preparedness of healthcare facilities in Delhi was also reviewed in particular. Discussions focused on the availability of hospital beds, critical-care facilities, essential medicines and other medical supplies.

The government has been closely monitoring the seasonal influenza situation and has emphasised the need for hospitals and healthcare institutions to maintain the necessary level of preparedness.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda said that raising public awareness and adopting preventive measures are essential to protect against influenza. He urged people to maintain respiratory hygiene and clean their hands regularly. He advised those experiencing persistent or severe respiratory symptoms, breathing difficulties or other warning signs to seek medical attention without delay.

The Health Minister reiterated that the situation regarding seasonal influenza, including H1N1, is being monitored continuously and closely across the country. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is coordinating with states and Union Territories, hospitals, laboratories and other relevant institutions.

The ministry is focusing on effective surveillance, early detection of infections, timely treatment and proactive preparedness of healthcare facilities to ensure an effective response to seasonal influenza cases.
