
Hooghly, 21 August (H.S.): An elderly man was allegedly beaten to death with an iron rod over a property dispute in the Bagpara Chhotbelu area under the Piyarapur outpost of Srirampur police station on Friday morning. The deceased has been identified as 60-year-old Yogeshwar Chandra Bag, who reportedly worked as a delivery man for Bharat Gas Agency.
According to local residents, Bag was known in the area as a quiet and sociable person. Police said a long-standing dispute over property was allegedly going on between Bag and Tapan Bag. The latter has been accused of attacking Yogeshwar with an iron rod, resulting in his death.
Following the incident, the accused, Tapan Bag, allegedly went to the Piyarapur outpost and surrendered before the police. On receiving information about the incident, police reached the spot, took the body into custody and sent it to Srirampur Walsh Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Police have initiated an investigation into the case. Officers are probing the circumstances surrounding the death and the exact motive behind the alleged attack. The accused is being questioned, while police are also examining other aspects of the incident.
The incident has created tension and anger among local residents. Locals have demanded a fair investigation and strict legal action against those found responsible.
