
Guwahati, 21 August (HS): The flood situation in Assam is gradually improving as all major rivers continue to flow below the danger mark. However, floodwaters are still affecting five districts, with 14,799 people in 92 villages across 14 revenue circles continuing to face the impact of the deluge.
According to the latest Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) data, the affected districts are Sivasagar, Nagaon, Golaghat, Dhemaji and Jorhat. Around 3,083 hectares of agricultural land remain submerged. The flood-related death toll in the state has reached 106.
The worst-affected districts include Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat. The state government continues to operate six relief camps and six relief distribution centres. While 238 people are staying in relief camps, another 1,165 non-camp residents are receiving relief supplies.
A total of 20,119 animals have also been affected, including 10,561 large animals, 5,695 small animals and 3,863 poultry birds. Four medical teams were deployed in flood-affected areas on Thursday to provide healthcare services.
Relief materials distributed among affected people included 19.98 quintals of rice, 3.49 quintals of pulses, 1.04 quintals of salt and 104.85 litres of mustard oil. Animal fodder comprising 86.448 quintals of wheat bran and 194 quintals of rice bran was also distributed.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Thursday and apprised him of the damage caused by the floods as well as the ongoing relief and rehabilitation measures. The Prime Minister assured continued support and monitoring of the flood situation.
The state government is also assessing extensive damage to roads, bridges and other infrastructure in the affected areas. Departments concerned are conducting regular reviews and taking necessary measures for relief, rehabilitation and restoration.---------
