Hooghly, 20 August (H.S.): Police in Arambagh have arrested a Trinamool Congress leader in connection with allegations of corruption, extortion, post-poll violence and vandalism. According to police sources, the arrested person is Partha Hazarika, head of Haringkhola-I Gram Panchayat and a Trinamool Congress candidate from the Pursurah Assembly constituency.

Based on a complaint, Arambagh Police arrested Hazarika on Wednesday. He was produced before the Arambagh Sub-Divisional Court on Thursday. The arrest has triggered considerable discussion in political circles in the area.

Hazarika has been accused of involvement in several alleged irregularities, including post-poll violence, vandalism of houses and extortion in the locality. However, the allegations are subject to judicial proceedings, and he cannot be treated as guilty unless the charges are established in court.

The police said the investigation into the allegations is underway.
