London, 20 August (H.S.): One of the world’s most popular football leagues is ready for the 2026-27 Premier League season. Defending champions Arsenal will begin their title defence, while Coventry City, Hull City and Ipswich Town will return to the top flight. The world’s leading players, major clubs and experienced managers will once again compete for the title, European qualification and survival.
Arsenal face title-defence challenge
Arsenal ended a 21-year wait by winning the 2025-26 Premier League title, their first championship since 2003-04. The triumph also meant that three different clubs have won the title in the last three seasons, with Manchester City lifting the trophy in 2023-24 and Liverpool in 2024-25.
This season, a record-equalling nine Premier League clubs will compete in European competitions, including five in the UEFA Champions League. England’s top position in the UEFA coefficient rankings has earned the Premier League an additional Champions League place for a second consecutive season.
Several contests decided by fine margins
The 2025-26 season was marked by matches that remained fiercely contested until the final moments. A total of 115 goals were scored in the 90th minute or later, accounting for 11 per cent of all goals. As many as 142 matches were decided by a one-goal margin, representing 37.3 per cent of all fixtures.
After gaining promotion, Sunderland AFC finished seventh and became the best-performing promoted side to finish seventh since Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2018-19. Their impressive campaign earned Sunderland a place in the UEFA Europa League.
Bournemouth finished sixth and qualified for European competition for the first time in the club’s history, securing a place in the Europa League.
At the other end of the table, West Ham United were relegated despite collecting 39 points. It was the club’s first relegation since 2010-11. Their 39-point tally is the joint-highest for a relegated team, matching the totals recorded by Birmingham City and Blackpool in 2010-11.
Coventry, Hull and Ipswich return
Coventry City, Hull City and Ipswich Town will return to the Premier League this season. Coventry won the Championship to secure promotion to the top flight after 25 years. Their promotion also brings Frank Lampard back into the Premier League dugout. The former Chelsea midfielder and Premier League Hall of Famer won the Premier League title three times as a player.
Ipswich Town return to the top flight after spending just one season in the Championship. Gary O’Neil will take charge of the side, bringing Premier League managerial experience from his spells with Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Hull City have also returned to the Premier League after a decade. They secured promotion by defeating Middlesbrough in the play-off final with a late goal.
A stage for the world’s top players
The Premier League’s global appeal is also reflected in the diversity of its players. Last season, the 20 clubs featured players from 67 countries, while footballers representing 128 nationalities have played in the league throughout its history.
As many as 46 per cent of the world’s top 100 players currently play in the Premier League, with English players accounting for the largest share at 14 per cent.
Erling Haaland reached 100 Premier League goals in just 111 appearances, breaking Alan Shearer’s previous mark of 124 matches. Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, meanwhile, set a new single-season record with 21 assists, surpassing the previous mark of 20 held jointly by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
Premier League clocks more than 9.04 billion minutes of viewing in India
The Premier League’s popularity is also expanding rapidly in India. According to a joint study by JioStar and Nielsen based on BARC data, Premier League viewing time across the JioStar network in India exceeded 9.04 billion minutes during the 2025-26 season.
The league has 144.5 million followers in India, while its combined linear television and digital reach has increased 2.4-fold over the past five years. Rajasthan, Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh accounted for around 12 per cent of the audience five years ago, a share that has now risen to nearly 25 per cent, representing growth of more than 200 per cent.
Non-metro cities with populations of more than one million account for 55 per cent of mobile and web views and 63 per cent of connected-TV viewing. Premier League linear television viewing in India is also reportedly nearly three times that of the UEFA Champions League.
Lampard and Arteta eye major challenges
Frank Lampard said Coventry’s primary objective would be to remain in the Premier League and that achieving it would require hard work on the pitch. He described the club’s return to the top flight as a major achievement.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, has expressed his ambition to win the Premier League title for a second consecutive season. He believes the squad possesses the passion, desire, ability and belief required to achieve that goal and said the club must continue winning major trophies to strengthen its position.
Arsenal to face Coventry in opening fixture
Arsenal will begin their title defence against newly promoted Coventry City on Friday, August 21. The opening round will also feature Hull City hosting Manchester United, Ipswich Town taking on Sunderland, Newcastle United facing Liverpool and Fulham meeting Chelsea.
All timings are in Indian Standard Time.
