Thiruvananthapuram, 20 August (H.S.): Isolated rainfall is likely across Kerala on Thursday, though the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has not issued any district-level colour alert.
Moderate rainfall is expected at a few places in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Kasaragod districts. Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur may receive light rain at isolated locations, the department said.
The wet weather is being influenced by a deep depression persisting over northern Jharkhand and adjoining areas of southwestern Bihar and southeastern Uttar Pradesh. The system is likely to move west-northwestwards across Jharkhand, southeastern Uttar Pradesh and northern Chhattisgarh before weakening into a well-marked low-pressure area.
Under its influence, light to moderate rainfall is likely to continue in Kerala until August 23.
Meanwhile, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea as a red alert for the Kallakkadal phenomenon remains in force along the coasts of Kerala, Lakshadweep, Puducherry and southern Tamil Nadu on Thursday.
The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has declared a red alert for all coastal districts of Kerala, warning of rough seas, strong waves and possible coastal flooding.
High waves ranging from 1.1 metres to 1.8 metres are likely along the Kerala coast until 5.30 p.m. Thursday. The swell waves could inundate low-lying coastal areas and trigger coastal erosion along vulnerable stretches.
Residents living close to the shoreline have been urged to remain vigilant and follow instructions issued by the district administration and disaster management authorities. Fishing vessels should be secured safely, while people have been advised to avoid beaches and coastal roads exposed to strong waves.
Authorities are monitoring the situation as changing sea conditions could pose risks even in areas where rainfall remains limited. Emergency teams have also been asked to remain prepared to respond immediately if seawater enters homes or damages public infrastructure.
