Kolkata, 20 August (H.S.) : In a significant political development in Birbhum, Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipati and Hasan Trinamool Congress MLA Kajal Sheikh resigned from his post on Thursday. His resignation came ahead of a proposed no-confidence motion brought against him by 19 Trinamool Congress members of the Zilla Parishad.
The no-confidence motion was scheduled to be taken up at a meeting on Friday, where voting was also expected. Kajal Sheikh’s resignation before the meeting has triggered fresh political speculation in the district.
According to reports, Sheikh submitted his resignation on August 19. He appeared before the concerned authority on Thursday morning to explain the reasons for stepping down. Sheikh reportedly said that he had resigned voluntarily for personal reasons and that there was no pressure on him to leave the post. His resignation was subsequently accepted.
The Birbhum Zilla Parishad has 52 members. The 19 Trinamool members who moved the no-confidence motion against Sheikh are reportedly associated with the faction considered close to former Trinamool Congress Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal.
Kajal Sheikh’s resignation is therefore being viewed as significant in the context of the ongoing factional dynamics and shifting balance of power within the Trinamool Congress in Birbhum.
With Sheikh stepping down before the no-confidence motion could be taken up, discussions have already begun over who will be the next Sabhadhipati of the Birbhum Zilla Parishad.
