Varanasi, 20 Aug (HS): The Institute of Medical Sciences at

Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, has received

financial clearance for six significant biomedical research projects via the

Indian Council of Medical Research's (ICMR) NIRF specialized grant scheme. The

projects, which have a combined budget of about Rs. 15 crore, are focused on

critical national health priorities such as early detection of gallbladder

cancer, next-generation antimicrobial resistance (AMR) strategies, diagnostics

for post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis, pediatric septic shock, and precision

oncology for renal cell carcinoma. These awards will help fund large cohort

investigations, precision clinical trials, multi-omics biomarker discoveries,

and enhanced laboratory analyzes. The study will be carried out by the

Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), the Institute of Science (IoS), and

collaborative engineering departments.

Addressing the grant clearance, Vice-Chancellor Prof Ajit

Kumar Chaturvedi stated, As part of our commitment to excellence in

medical sciences and accessible healthcare, BHU is focusing on research while

simultaneously strengthening its patient care infrastructure. Our goal is to

integrate scientific advances into better patient care.”

The news comes amid a spike in research activity at BHU, with academics

submitting more than 200 project proposals to various funding bodies in the

last six months, many of which are awaiting outcomes. Prof. Manoj Pandey, Dean

of Research at the Institute of Medical Sciences, emphasized the university's

commitment to promoting revolutionary research in order to improve BHU's

reputation and social contributions. He emphasized that the ultimate objective

is to maximize extramural financing and develop a healthy, facilitative

research environment at universities in order to enhance our institutional

standing in the long run and contribute effectively to nation-building.

Director of the Institute of Medical Sciences, Prof. SN

Sankhwar, stated that the grants demonstrate IMS's commitment to pushing the

boundaries of medical research and patient-centric science. Our physicians and

researchers are effectively bridging the gap between rigorous clinical

excellence and cutting-edge laboratory science. The institution continues to

instill in its faculty a strong passion for medical research and clinical

innovation, allowing researchers to solve crucial and cutting-edge healthcare

concerns.
