
Guwahati, 20 August (HS): The Assam Agriculture Department will focus on expanding spice cultivation in the state, with emphasis on increasing production, improving quality and productivity and creating better market opportunities for farmers.
Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika on Thursday held a meeting with Spices Board of India Secretary MS Manivannan and officials of the Board’s North East India Regional Office at Janata Bhawan. The Commissioner and Director of Agriculture, Assam, were also present at the meeting.
Detailed discussions were held on measures to strengthen Assam’s spice sector. Hazarika highlighted the state’s potential to significantly increase the cultivation of ginger, turmeric, black pepper, chillies, garlic, coriander, cardamom, tejpat and other spices.
The Minister said growing domestic and international demand for spices offers significant opportunities to increase farmers’ income and strengthen Assam’s agricultural economy.
Hazarika assured the Spices Board of India that the Assam Agriculture Department would extend all possible support to spice growers across the state. He stressed the need for coordinated efforts with the Board to promote spice cultivation, improve productivity and quality, and strengthen market linkages to ensure better returns for farmers.
The meeting also emphasised leveraging Assam’s agro-climatic advantages and expanding the state’s presence in both domestic and international spice markets.----------
